コンブレタスタチンA4（CA4）は，南アフリカに生育するアフリカブッシュウィロウ（Combretum caffrum）から抽出された化合物で，抗腫瘍活性を有します1)。CA4はチューブリン二量体に結合して微小管重合を阻害し，内皮細胞の有糸分裂を停止してアポトーシスへ誘導することが分かっています1,2)。CA4のリン酸誘導体であるコンブレタスタチンA4リン酸二ナトリウム（CA4P）は水溶性の前駆体で，代謝によりCA4に変換されます3)。CA4Pを用いた研究により，血管内皮カドヘリンを阻害することで腫瘍血管新生時の内皮細胞に多大な影響を及ぼすことが明らかにされています4,5)。最近ではブラジルに生育するCombretum leprosumからもCA4が抽出されています6)。また，様々なCA4誘導体も合成されており，これらの腫瘍活性評価が行われています7,8)。
