Fluorescent Organosilica Nanoparticles for Biological Imaging
Organosilica nanoparticles are suitable for the detection of biomolecules due to the diameter of 100 nm.1) The surfaces of organosilica FITC (Exmax: 492 nm, Emmax: 523 nm), and organosilica rhodamine B (Exmax: 556 nm, Emmax: 579 nm) are functionalized with thiol group, allowing them to be easily attached as fluorescent labels to biomolecules such as antibodies). Organosilica nanoparticles make it possible to detect biomolecules easily. For example, organosilica nanoparticles have been used to fluorescently label cells for detection by conjugating them to antibodies.2) It has also been reported that organosilica nanoparticles administered to mice intravenously can accumulate in cancer tissue; this, coupled with the strong fluorescence signal characteristic of organosilica nanoparticles, has allowed for near effortless live imaging of cancer tissue.3)
