Direct α-Oxyacylation of Carbonyl Compounds

Typical Procedure: α-Oxyacylation of Ketones
To a stirring mixture of ketone (1 mmol), carboxylic acid (1 mmol) and Bu₄NI (36.9 mg, 0.1 mmol, 10 mol%) in AcOEt (5 mL) is added tert-butyl hydroperoxide (5.5 M in nonane or decane, 364 µL, 2 mmol) at room temperature. The resulting mixture is heated to 75 °C. The reaction is monitored by TLC analysis. After the reaction is completed, the reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature and poured into sat. Na₂S₂O₃ aq. (5 mL) and sat. NaHCO₃ aq. (5 mL) extracted with AcOEt (twice), and washed with brine. The combined organic layers are dried over anhydrous Na₂SO₄ and solvents are removed in vacuo. The residue is purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel (hexane–AcOEt as eluent) to give the corresponding analytically pure product.
