Application
Trospium chloride: A Muscarinic Receptor Antagonist
Trospium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound, is a muscarinic receptor antagonist. It binds specifically and with high affinity to muscarinic M1, M2 and M3 receptor subtypes, but not nicotinic receptors. It blocks the contractile effect of acetylcholine on the smooth musculature of urinary bladder through binding linkage to the muscarinic receptors. Therefore, it is used for the treatment of bladder overactivity. Trospium chloride is hydrophilic and does not cross the normal blood-brain barrier in significant amounts, so that it has minimal central anticholinergic activity. Trospium chloride undergoes negligible metabolized by the cytochrome P 450 system, and therefore has a low potential for drug interactions. (The product is for research purpose only.)
