Sulfonium Salt Utilized both in Mesitylation and in Trifluoromethylation

Dimesityl(trifluoromethyl)sulfonium trifluoromethanesulfonate (1) is a sulfonium salt also known as Mes-Umemoto reagent or Yagupolskii-Umemoto reagent. 1 was first reported as a mesitylating reagent in cross-coupling,¹⁾ but later 1 was found to be utilized in trifluoromethylation of (hetero)aryl bromides²⁾ and alkyl bromides.³⁾ The trifluoromethyl group is introduced by the photoredox reactions in any substrates and the reaction proceeds in complicated molecules like drugs in good or high yields. So 1 is also useful to introduce the trifluoromethyl group at the late stage.
