Nile Red Excellent at Detecting Lipid Droplets
Nile Red (1) is a lipophilic fluorescent dye with high photostability. It emits almost no fluorescence in water, but 1 emits strong fluorescence (Exmax: 551 nm, Emmax: 631 nm) upon binding to hydrophobic regions of proteins or lipid droplets.1) 1 can distinctly stain lipid droplets in both live and fixed cells, making it widely used for detecting intracellular lipid droplets using fluorescence microscopy or flow cytometry.2)
