A mixture of methyl methacrylate (801 g, 8 mol), 2-iodo-2-methylpropionitrile (15.6 g, 80 mmol), sodium iodide (6 g, 40 mmol), and 18-crown-6-ether (10.6 g, 40 mmol) is heated in a flask at 70 °C for 4 h under an argon atmosphere with stirring. An aliquot (0.1 mL) of the solution is taken out by a syringe, cooled to room temperature, diluted by THF or DMF to a known concentration, and analyzed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), yielding the polymer with Mn = 8200 and Mw/Mn = 1.16 (monomer conversion = 83%).
