Application
Allantoin: The End Product of Purine Metabolism for Most Animals
Allantoin is the end product of purine metabolism for most animals, except for humans. Uric acid [U0018] is the product of purine metabolism and is generated in the cascade of hypoxanthine [H0311] → xanthine [X0004] → uric acid. The both transformations are catalyzed by xanthine oxidase (XO), but only humans lack the necessary enzyme urate oxidase (uricase) for conversion of uric acid to allantoin. It has been reported that allantoin acts as a skin-conditioning agents, and is traditionally used for the treatment of skin ulcers and hypertrophic scars. (The product is for research purpose only.)
