Application
Melatonin: A Regulator of a Wide Range of Physiological Processes

Melatonin is synthesized and released by the pineal gland and locally in the retina following a circadian rhythm (24-hour cycles) with low levels during the day and elevated levels at night. Melatonin synchronizes both central and peripheral oscillators, allowing the temporal organization of biological functions by circadian rhythms. In addition, melatonin is remarkably functionally diverse with actions as a free radical scavenger and antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory molecular, and as an oncostatic agent. Melatonin activates two high-affinity G protein-coupled receptors, termed MT1 and MT2, to exert beneficial effects during sleep. For your information, ramelteon [R0216] is a selective melatonin MT1 and MT2 receptor agonist. (The product is for research purpose only.)
