Tetramethyl Orthosilicate (TMOS) has been recently utilized for the direct amidation of carboxylic acids and amines. A variety of amides can be prepared by combining a carboxylic acid react with an amine in refluxing toluene in the presence of TMOS as a dehydration-condensation agent to provide the corresponding amides in good yields. This reaction can proceed amino acids as well as general carboxylic acids and amines. Furthermore, this method is expected to be used in the scale-up synthesis of organic materials and pharmaceuticals due to the direct method and excellent atom economy.
