Application
Edaravone: A Strong Free Radical Scavenger and a Powerful Antioxidant
Edaravone (MCI-186) is a strong free radical scavenger and a powerful antioxidant. There have been many reports describing that free radicals such as hydroxyl radical (·OH) play a major causative role in the development of cerebral vascular disorder resulting from ischaemia. During ischaemia or ischemic reperfusion, the hyperactivity of a metabolic system of arachidonic acid increases the production of free radicals. These free radicals peroxidize unsaturated fatty acid of cell membrane lipids leads to cell membrane injury. Besides, oxidative stress is believed to contribute to the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Edaravone inhibits lipid peroxidation, and thereby prevents oxidative damage to brain cells or neurons. Consequently, edaravone improves of neurological symptoms, and inhibits the progression of ALS.
