Application
Galantamine Hydrobromide: A Unique Dual Mode Agent, an Inhibitor of Acetylcholinesterase and an Allosteric Modulator of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors

Galantamine, a tertiary alkaloid found in the bulbs of Galanthus woronowi. Galantamine increases the concentration of acetylcholine (ACh) in brain tissue through competitive and reversible inhibition of its hydrolysis by acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Besides, galantamine stimulates nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) as an allosteric potentiating ligand (APL) to enhance brain cholinergic function. Therefore, galantamine has shown potential for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Galantamine is metabolized in the liver via cytochrome P450 enzymes CYP2D6 and CYP3A4.
