Application
Streptomycin Sulfate: The First Aminoglycoside Antibiotic

Streptomycin sulfate is the first aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from the soil microbe Streptomyces griseus by Waksman and Schatz. Streptomycin sulfate has activity against aerobic Gram-negative bacteria that are not sensitive to the penicillins. Streptomycin sulfate binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, and then it inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. Streptomycin-resistant bacterial strains appeared soon after its introduction. However, a number of aminoglycosides have been subsequently discovered as a result of research.
