Application
Ajmaline: An Indole Alkaloid with Ion Channel Inhibitory Activity
Ajmaline is an indole alkaloid that was first isolated from the root of Rauvolfia serpentina, a species of flower in the milkweed family Apocynaceae.1) Ion channels alter the ion balance of cardiac cells, by adjusting the amount of electrical charge to them. Therefore if the electrical properties of a cell are faulty this can result in a disturbance of the heart rhythm (arrhythmia). Ajmaline has ion (such as potassium and potassium) channel inhibitory and anti-arrhythmic activities, and has been widely used as a class Ia anti-arrhythmic agent.2-4) (The product is for research purpose only.)
