Berberine Chloride: An Isoquinoline Alkaloid with Multispectrum Activities

Berberine chloride, an isoquinoline alkaloid extracted from Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis L.) and many other plants, has been used in Traditional Chinese and Indian (Ayurvedic) medicines for its antimicrobial and antiprotozoal properties.1) Recent pharmacological studies on berberine have revealed its various pharmacological activities,1) such as anti-cancer,2) anti-inflammatory,3) anti-arrhythmic,4) anti-diabetic,5,6) cholesterol-lowering7) and neuroprotective effects,8) yet the exact mechanisms are unknown. However, it is reported that berberine is able to activate an enzyme called Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK).5,6) (The product is for research purpose only.)
