Sulfonium Salt Utilized both in Mesitylation and in Trifluoromethylation
Dimesityl(trifluoromethyl)sulfonium trifluoromethanesulfonate (1) is a sulfonium salt also known as Mes-Umemoto reagent or Yagupolskii-Umemoto reagent. 1 was first reported as a mesitylating reagent in cross-coupling,1) but later 1 was found to be utilized in trifluoromethylation of (hetero)aryl bromides2) and alkyl bromides.3) The trifluoromethyl group is introduced by the photoredox reactions in any substrates and the reaction proceeds in complicated molecules like drugs in good or high yields. So 1 is also useful to introduce the trifluoromethyl group at the late stage.
