Pyrene Derivatives with Diketone Moieties Useful for Energy Storage Materials

Pyrene-4,5-dione (1) and pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (2), which have one or two diketone moieties useful for the synthesis of azaacenes, have also attracted attention as energy storage materials due to their redox activity. It has reported that modifying carbon materials with 1 increases the energy density of supercapacitors made of carbon onions.1) 2 has been investigated as an organic electrode material for secondary batteries such as lithium ion batteries,2) lithium batteries,3,4) aqueous zinc batteries5) and all-solid-state sodium batteries.6) To compensate for the disadvantage that 2 is soluble in organic solvents, 2 has been applied to a lithium-ion battery by being introduced as a side-chain moiety of polymers.2) Recently, a study has shown that hydrofluoroether solvents, which exhibit weak electrostatic interactions with 2, suppress its dissolution and enhances the cycle stability of lithium battery capacity.4)
