Photoredox Organocatalyst Applicable to Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization
Atom transfer radical polymerization using organic photoredox catalysts (O-ATRP) has been extensively studied as a method to synthesize polymers with narrow molecular weight distribution without using metals.1) peri-Xanthenoxanthene (1) has been used as an organic semiconductor, however, in recent years it has also been used as a photoredox catalyst.2) 1 has a maximum absorption wavelength at 443 nm, and in combination with various initiators, 1 enables the synthesis of the corresponding polymers with narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.19 – 1.27). It is also shown that polymerization proceeds efficiently even in ppm order.3)
