Molecular-weight Controlled Polymerization Using Aluminum-porphyrins

Well-controlled molecular weight polymer synthesis is an extremely important subject for the molecular design of polymer materials. Aida et al. have found that aluminum porphyrin complexes ((TPP)AlX, 1) (such as prepared from tetraphenylporphyrin) can be used as superior initiators for the synthesis of polymer compounds having a narrow molecular weight distribution even when a variety of monomers are employed. In this polymerization, the molecular weight of polymers is increased by further addition of the monomer after polymerization has stopped. In particular, block copolymers are prepared when another monomer is added. Thus, the greatest characteristic property of this polymer synthetic method is that the obtained polymer compounds have a narrower molecular weight distribution.
