Application
Tetramethyl Orthosilicate (TMOS) as a Direct Amidation Reagent

4-Methylbenzylamine (274 mg, 2 mmol), benzoic acid (244 mg, 2 mmol), toluene (9.4 mL) and tetramethylorthosilicate (592 μL, 4 mmol) are charged into flask. This mixture is purged under nitrogen after the mixture is heated to reflux. After the reaction has completed, the volatiles are removed in vacuo. THF (10 mL) is added. Aqueous K2CO3 solution (0.3 M, 30 mL, 9 mmol) is added, then solid NaCl is added until saturation is observed. The aqueous phase is extracted with THF, and the combined organic layers are dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford the N-(4-methylbenzyl)benzamide (441 mg, 98% yield) as a colorless solid.
