Used Chemicals

Procedure

A solution of 2,6-dimethylphenol (500 mg, 4.1 mmol) and hexamethylenetetramine (574 mg, 4.1 mmol) in TFA (5 mL) was stirred under nitrogen at 80 ˚C for 1.5 hours. The reaction was quenched with water and extracted with diethyl ether. The organic phase was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and filtered. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde as a yellow solid (446 mg, 73% yield).

Analytical Data

The reaction mixture was monitored by NMR.

Analytical Data

4-Hydroxy-3,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde

1H NMR (270 MHz, CDCl3); δ 9.81 (s, 1H), 7.55 (s, 2H), 5.28 (bs, 1H), 2.31 (s, 6H).
