2-(9-Oxoxanthen-2-yl)propionic acid 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene salt (1), developed by Arimitsu et al., is a photobase generator (PBG) which releases a strong base TBD. 1 is a salt of TBD and methylxanthone acetic acid showing a highly efficient photodecarboxylation reaction (quantum yield: φ"=ca. 0.64), and generates free TBD through UV light irradiation (254 nm or 365 nm). For example, in irradiating a reactive resin which is prepared from epoxy monomer and thiol monomer with 1, anionic UV light curing can be performed at room temperature. It is also reported that TBD multiplies prolifically under irradiation with a base amplifier releasing TBD. It is expected that 1 will be used for various photopatterning materials because methylxanthone acetic acid can be paired with other bases not just TBD.
