Experimental procedure3): The β-ketoester 2 (0.2 mmol) is added to a solution of 3 (0.02 mmol), benzoic acid (0.02 mmol), and the aldehyde 1 (0.6 mmol) in toluene (0.2 mL). After complete consumption of 2, usually within 14–18 h, the crude product is directly charged on to silica gel and subjected to flash chromatography (hexane:Et2O) to afford 4.
