Application
Cefoxitin Sodium: A Second Generation Cephem Antibiotic against beta-Lactamase

Cefoxitin sodium and its free acid [C3598] are semi-synthetic antibiotic that are derived from cephamycin C which is produced by Streptomyces lactamdurans. Cefoxitins have bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria including aerobes and anaerobes.1,2) Cefoxitins are second generation cephem antibiotics which act by inhibition bacterial cell wall synthesis. Due to the presence of a 7-α methoxy group in the β-lactam ring, cefoxitins exhibit a high degree of stability in the presence of beta-lactamases.1,3)
