Fluorine-Substituted Carbonate Ester to Compose Non-Flammable Electrolytes
Lithium-ion batteries are indispensable devices in our daily lives. Therefore enhancing safety without compromising performance is an important issue. Development of non-flammable electrolytes already contributed to increasing safety. Fluorinated compounds have been reported to function as non-flammable electrolytes, and bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) carbonate (1) is one of them.1,2) Song et al. showed that an electrolyte composed of 1 and propylene carbonate (= PC) was non-flammable. The full-cell includes also fluoroethylene carbonate (= FEC) as an additive. It exhibited a high energy density of 856 Wh/kg and a high capacity retention of 93% even after 50 cycle tests.
