Application
Ethidium Bromide: A Widely Used Dye for DNA and RNA Detection
Ethidium bromide is widely used for DNA and RNA detection. Ethidium bromide binds to double-stranded DNA as an intercalator, inserting itself between the base pairs in the double helix, resulting in changes in the absorption and fluorescence properties of the dye. Ethidium bromide also is used to detect protein–DNA complexes.
