Application
AZADO Catalyzed One-Pot Oxidative Cleavage of Vicinal Diols to (Di)Carboxylic Acids

Typical Procedure (R1 = BzO(CH2)7-, R2 = H): To a solution of 9,10-dihydroxydecyl benzoate (30.0 mg, 0.102 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (0.26 mL) and H2O (0.26 mL) is added AZADOL (1.6 mg, 0.0102 mmol) and PhI(OAc)2 (164 mg, 0.510 mmol) at 0 °C. The mixture is allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 1 h. Then, 10% HCl is added to the mixture and the resultant solution is extracted with CH2Cl2. The combined organic layer is washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product is purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: AcOEt/Hexane = 1/8 to only AcOEt) to give 9-(benzoyloxy)nonanoic acid (26.8 mg, 0.0963 mmol, 94%) as white solid.
