The trifluoromethyl group is a strong electron-withdrawing group and it exhibits unique properties such as high electron negativity and hydrophobicity. As a result, efficient trifluoromethylating reagents are valuable in the research fields of bioactive compounds, agrochemicals and materials.1) Umemoto reagent IV is a new trifluoromethylating reagent developed by Umemoto et al.2) Umemoto reagent IV is activated by trifluoromethoxy groups, strong electron-withdrawing groups, so that it has higher reactivity than a conventional series of Umemoto reagents. The trifluoromethylation of electron-deficient methylenes and nitrogen-containing aromatic rings proceeds with Umemoto reagent IV to give the corresponding target compounds according to the equations below.
