Application
Iproniazid: A Monoamine-Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI)
Iproniazid is a monoamine-oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Originally, it was intended for the treatment of tuberculosis. In 1952, its antidepressant properties were discovered. MAOIs act by inhibiting the activity of monoamine oxidase, thus preventing the breakdown of monoamine neurotransmitters. Iproniazid was then used as an antidepressant agent until it was found to cause liver damage in 1961. It is oxidized by cytochrome P-450 enzymes in liver microsomes to a highly toxic agent, isopropylhydrazine. (The product is for research purpose only.)
