Application
Papaverine Hydrochloride: An Isoquinoline Alkaloid with Smooth Muscle Relaxation Activity

Papaverine hydrochloride is an isoquinoline alkaloid obtained from opium or prepared synthetically. The most characteristic effect of papaverine is relaxation of the tonus of all smooth muscle. Pharmacological studies suggest that papaverine exerts its effect on by an inhibitory action on phosphodiesterase, resulting in increased intracellular cAMP as well as inhibition of voltage-gated calcium channels.
