Application
A Mild Protection of Ketones and Aldehydes as 1,3-Dioxolanes in the Presence of Benzenesulfohydroxamic Acid
Typical Procedure (protection of cyclohexanone):
A solution of cyclohexanone (98.2 mg, 1 mmol), benzenesulfohydroxamic acid (121 mg, 0.7 mmol), triethylamine (101 mg, 1 mmol), and ethylene glycol (124 mg, 2 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (4 ml) is stirred at rt for 10 min. The solution is washed with water and brine, and dried over anhydrous MgSO4. The reaction mixture is filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by flash chromatography on basic alumina (eluent: EtOAc/hexane = 1/9) to give cyclohexanone ethylene acetal (127 mg, 89%).
