ShoyakuGreen, a Fluorescent Dye for Staining Lipid Droplets

The Lipid Droplets (LDs) are organelles that store neutral lipids, and are mainly composed up of triglycerides and cholesterol esters. Many cells have LDs and the roles of LDs have been reported to be involved in biological functions.1-3) ShoyakuGreen, which was developed by Karasawa et al.,4) is a fluorescent probe which can stain LDs specifically. The fluorescence signal of ShoyakuGreen on the LDs can be observed with excitation wavelength at 403 nm and emission wavelength at 525 nm, respectively. ShoyakuGreen exhibits low cell cytotoxicity when added to the culture medium at even high concentration, therefore it is useful for staining LDs in cultured cells.4)
