Electrolyte Additives Forming a Stable and Elastic SEI to Improve the Stability of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Fluoroethylene carbonate (= FEC) is used as an effective electrolyte additive to enhance the stability of lithium-ion batteries by forming the stable and elastic Solid Electrolyte Interphase (= SEI). The influence of FEC on LiPF6/ethylene carbonate (= EC) electrolytes for Si anodes was investigated through classical molecular dynamics, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations by Hou et al.1) FEC is found to significantly modify the solvation structure and reduction behavior of the electrolyte while being innocuous to the transport properties of the electrolyte. In addition, Shkrob et al. used radiolysis, laser photoionization, electron paramagnetic resonance, and transient absorption spectroscopy to analyze the redox chemistry of FEC.2) The results showed that FEC forms a highly cross-linked polymer by radical polymerization and defluorination, yielding an elastic coating, which is capable of withstanding stresses caused by cycling of the electrodes.
