Application
Picrotoxin: A Natural Sesquiterpene Antagonist of GABAA Receptors
Picrotoxin is a sesquiterpene that occurs naturally in the fruit of the Anamirta cocculus which a wild woody climber, distributed throughout India as well as South-East Asia. Picrotoxin is a mixture of two compounds, picrotoxinin and picrotin. Of the two compounds, picrotoxinin is the active ingredient. Picrotoxinin is a naturally occurring poison that a noncompetitive antagonist of GABAA receptors (GABARs), the primary mediators of inhibitory neurotransmission in the nervous system. Picrotoxinin prevents ion flow through the chloride channel activated by GABA in the GABAR, a member of the cys-loop, ligand-gated ion channel superfamily. (The product is for research purpose only.)
