Heterodinuclear Metal Complex via Bridging Ligand
2,2'-Bipyrimidyl behaves as a metalloligand like 2,2'-bipyridyls and can be coordinately bonded to two kinds of metals. For example, Fukuzumi et al. have reported the synthesis of a heterodinuclear iridium-ruthenium complex (1) using 2,2'-bipyrimidyl. 1 acts as a catalyst for four-electron reduction of dissolved O2 with formic acid in water. Besides this, Irfanullah and Iftikhar have reported the synthesis of a europium-terbium complex (2) as a heterodilanthanide complex. The luminescence of Eu(III) is enhanced by intramolecular energy transfer from Tb(III) to Eu(III) in the complex.
