Application
β-Caryophyllene: A Bicyclic Sesquiterpene with Diverse Biological Activities
β-Caryophyllene is a bicyclic sesquiterpene found in essential oils from various plants. Diverse biological activities of β-daryophyllene have been reported such as anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic and local anesthetic activities. Recently, the agonist action on cannabinoid type 2 (CB2) receptors of β-daryophyllene has also been reported and has attracted much attention. Because the CB2 receptor has been shown to have potential as a therapeutic target in models of diseases, such as neuropathic pain and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
