Application
Strychnine: An Indole Alkaloid with Antagonistic Activity toward Glycine and Acetylcholine Receptors
Strychnine [S0249] is an indole alkaloid obtained from the seeds and bark of Strychnos nux-vomica, has been used as a rodenticide for more than a century. Glycine is an inhibitory transmitter to motor neurons and interneurons in the spinal cord. Strychnine is a neurotoxin which acts as an antagonist of glycine and acetylcholine receptors, resulting in disinhibition of motor neurons in the spinal cord.1,2) In addition, strychnine has been a target compound for total synthesis since it was first synthesized by the group of R. B. Woodward in 1954.3,4) Strychnine is poorly soluble in water, but its sulfate [S0094], nitrate [S0093] and hydrochloride [S0257] are moderately soluble in water. (The product is for research purpose only.)
