Iron-catalyzed direct arylation
Typical procedure: To a dried vessel under argon atmosphere, the Fe(OAc)2 (4.5 mg), bathophenanthroline (16.6 mg), crushed dry KOtBu (112 mg), iodobenzene (102 mg) and benzene (3.9 g) were added. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 20 min and then at 80 °C for 20 h. After cooling a mixture of CH2Cl2 / hexane (1:1) (2 mL) was added, and the solution was filtered through a silica pad. The pad was then rinsed with CH2Cl2 / hexane (1:1) (15 mL). The combined solutions were concentrated and the crude mixture was purified by column chromatography (eluent: hexanes) to give biphenyl as a white solid (75 mg, 89 %).
