BIIB021: A Heat Shock Protein 90 (HSP90) Inhibitor with Antitumor Activity
BIIB021 (also called CNF2024) is the first oral, synthetic heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitor. Reportedly, BIIB021 induces the apoptosis of various types of tumor cell in vitro and in vivo.1-4) HSP90 is a chaperone protein that assists other proteins to fold properly, stabilizes proteins against heat stress, and aids in protein degradation. It has recently been reported that HSP90 also stabilizes a number of proteins required for tumor growth. Therefore, HSP90 inhibitors have been investigated as anticancer agents.5)
