Application
Thiamphenicol: A More Potent and Less Toxic Derivative of Chloramphenicol [C2255]
Thiamphenicol was a semi-synthetic chloramphenicol at first in which the nitro moiety of chloramphenicol [C2255] was replaced by a methylsulphone. Thiamphenicol can now be made by total chemical synthesis. Thiamphenicol has broad activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobes and for some anaerobes. Thiamphenicol has a similar spectrum of activity to that of chloramphenicol, but is more potent and less toxic. Thiamphenicol inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible organisms by binding to specific nucleotides in 23S rRNA within the 50S subunit of a bacterial ribosome.
