Application
Vincristine Sulfate: An Antitumor Vinca Alkaloid
Vincristine Sulfate is an antitumor vinca alkaloid obtained from a common flowering herb, the periwinkle plant (Vinca rosea Linn). The exact mechanism of action has not been determined, but vincristine sulfate has been related to the inhibition of microtubule formation in mitotic spindle, resulting in an arrest of dividing cells at the metaphase stage. Vincristine has been reported to have neurotoxic side effects. However, the liposome encapsulation of vincristine enhances the efficacy of the vincristine antitumor activity while simultaneously decreasing the neurotoxicity associated with it.
