Application
5-(hydroxymethyl)uridine: A Base-Modified Ribonucleoside Used in SMUG1 and Epigenetics Studies
Single-strand-selective monofunctional uracil-DNA glycosylase 1 (SMUG1) is a base excision repair enzyme that not only recognizes and removes uracil and oxidized pyrimidines from DNA, but is also capable of processing modified RNA substrates.1,2) There are reports that SUMG1 contributes to rRNA quality control, in part by regulating the level of 5-(hydroxymethyl)uridine (5hmU) in the cell.1,2) It is also possible that 5-(hydroxymethyl)uridine acts as an epigenetic biomarker.3)
