Application
Hygromycin B: A Selective Reagent in Molecular Genetics Experiments on Cells
Hygromycin B is a water-soluble aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus. It is acts by binding to the 80S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and inhibiting protein synthesis. In molecular genetics, hygromycin B is used in genetic modification as a selective reagent to isolate prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells coupled to a gene coding for hygromycin resistance.
