Application
Mecamylamine Hydrochloride: A Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors (nAChRs) Antagonist
Mecamylamine hydrochloride is a non-selective, non-competitive antagonist of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). It was developed as an antihypertensive agent in the 1950s, but is rarely used today for hypertension because of its widespread ganglionic side effects, and is more often now as a neuro research tool. Mecamylamine easily traverses the blood-brain barrier to reach the central nervous system (CNS), where it acts as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist.1-5) This effect is thought to be due to antagonist effects at the α4β2 nicotinic receptors in the brain.4) Recently, it is expected to be used as an agent in treating CNS disorders, including nicotine and alcohol addiction in clinical.5) (The product is for research purpose only.)
