Application
Oxidant for Photo-oxidation of Alcohols
Experimental procedure: An acetone solution (5 mL) of cyclododecanol (92.2 mg, 0.5 mmol) and 4-benzoylpyridine (109.9 mg, 0.6 mmol) is placed in a test tube under Ar atmosphere. The test tube is placed at ca. 5 cm distance from a UV-lamp and is irradiated using a 100 W medium-pressure mercury lamp at room temperature for 48 h. After consumption of the alcohol, the solution is evaporated to remove volatile materials. The residue is purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane:AcOEt = 100:1 - 10:1) to afford cyclododecanone in 78% yield (70.7 mg).
