Polyethyleneimines Used in Direct Air Capture (DAC) Researches

Polyethyleneimines (PEIs), are aziridine polymers, with a wide range of applications like heavy metal trapping owing to their abundant amino groups. PEIs have gained significant interest as a material for direct air capture (DAC) to combat climate change due to their ability to capture carbon dioxide by chemisorption through the formation of carbamates and bicarbonates with their amino groups.1) In order to develop DAC materials with desired functionalities such as higher carbon dioxide adsorption capacity, lower desorption temperature, and higher cycle stability, composites that make use of PEIs’ properties are also being developed. It has been reported that the impregnation of PEI can enhance the carbon dioxide capture capacities of mesoporous silica and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) / porous coordination polymers (PCPs).2,3)
PEIs with different viscosities (200-500 mPa·s, 500-2500 mPa·s, 3500-7500 mPa·s, 8500-15000 mPa·s, 40000-150000 mPa·s) are available.
