Erastin: Inducer of Ferroptosis

Ferroptosis was reported by Stockwell et al. in 2012 as iron-dependent cell death mechanism separate from apoptosis.¹⁾ Ferroptosis is thought to be involved in various diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases²⁾ and ischemia-reperfusion injury.³⁾ Erastin induces ferroptosis by inhibiting cystine uptake into the cell by the cystine transporter and decreasing the intracellular concentration of the antioxidant glutathione.⁴⁾
