Application
Efavirenz: a Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor (NNRTI)

Efavirenz is a second-generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) which shows good inhibitory activity against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (RT). RT is an essential viral enzyme which transcribes viral RNA into DNA. Compared with first-generation NNRTIs such as nevirapine [N0922], efavirenz shows greater resilience to drug resistance mutations within HIV-1 RT. Efavirenz is not effective against HIV-2 RT and human DNA polymerase.
