High Purity Carbazole / RTP Inducer: Bd

Carbazole is an important building block in materials science. Liu et. al. recently reported that the optical properties of carbazole can be significantly affected by trace impurities that are difficult to separate.1,2) They have demonstrated that a small amount of 1H-Benzo[f]indole (= Bd) contained in carbazole induces room temperature phosphorescence (RTP). They also confirmed that RTP was observed in carbazole-derivatives which made from carbazole containing Bd. These results demonstrate the importance of raw material purity in materials science.

Non-Phosphorescent High Purity Carbazole

In view of the importance of the purity of carbazole as a starting material, TCI has commercialized high purity carbazole [C3722] with excellent optical properties. C3722 is free from trace impurities that affect optical properties, and its optical properties are guaranteed.
For example, the absorbance edge of C3722 is flat and RTP is not observed as shown in Figure 1 and 2. Conventional carbazole shows the absorbance at 350 - 400 nm and RTP at 500 - 800 nm range.

Room Temperature Phosphorescence Inducer Bd

We have also commercialized Bd [B6283] by focusing on its property as RTP inducer. Table 1 and Figure 3 show the absorption and emission properties of Bd and carbazole. By adding 0.5 wt% of Bd to carbazole [C3722], RTP is observed in 500 - 700 nm region (Figure 4).

Product

Advantages

  • Luminescent material which induces room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) by adding a very small amount to carbazole.
  • RTP property can be controlled by chemical modification.
