Self-Assembled Monolayer (SAM) Forming Agents Making Tin-Based Perovskite Solar Cells Efficient

It has been already reported that SAM forming agents such as 2PACz and MeO-2PACz increase efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSC) in case of lead-based perovskite light absorption layer.1) Advantages of using these carbazole-based SAM forming agents are: molecular designability, excellent mechanical flexibility, no need of dopants, negligible loss of light transmittance, large-area scalability, and almost conformal and loss-less electrical contacts. These SAM served as a hole-selective interlayer for lead-based PSCs to attain a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of more than 20%.2) PSC-silicon tandem solar cell with the SAM interlayer showed a PCE of more than 29%.3)
Recently, Diau et al. have reported tin-based perovskite solar cells by using SAM forming agents like 2PACz and MeO-2PACz (Device structure: ITO/SAM/FASnI3/C60/BCP/Ag).4) An optimal device with MeO-2PACz resulted in 6.5% of PCE. Their stability test of the device showed that 80% of the initial PCE was maintained in a glovebox for 1900 hours. This work can propose a new direction for the development of SAM-based lead-free perovskite solar cells for their future scaled-up production.
